The Different Types Of AI, Explained Simply.
No jargon. No hype. Just the map.
"AI" gets used for everything from your phone's autocorrect to science-fiction robots. That's why it feels confusing. This guide sorts the main types of artificial intelligence into four simple maps, then shows which ones are actually useful for a lean small business today.

The Short Answer
Yes, there are different types of AI. There isn't one official list, because people sort AI in different ways. The four most useful ways are:
- By capability — how smart it is compared to a person (narrow, general, super).
- By how it thinks — whether it remembers, learns, or understands (reactive, limited memory, theory of mind, self-aware).
- By technique — the technology underneath (machine learning, deep learning, language models).
- By what it does — the jobs you hand it (writing, seeing, predicting, acting).
Every AI tool you can use today — ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Copilot, your email spam filter — is narrow AI. It's very good at specific jobs and has no understanding or goals of its own.
Types Of AI By Capability
This is the most common way to sort AI, and the one most articles start with.
Exists today
1. Narrow AI (Weak AI)
Built to do one task, or a family of related tasks, well. Recommending a product, transcribing a call, drafting an email, spotting fraud. Even the most impressive chat assistants are narrow AI: they predict useful text very well, but they don't think the way people do.
Doesn't exist yet
2. General AI (AGI)
A hypothetical AI that could learn and reason across any subject as well as a person can, and move skills from one area to another. Researchers disagree on whether, or when, it will arrive. Treat bold timelines with healthy doubt.
Theoretical
3. Super AI (ASI)
An idea for AI that would go beyond human ability at almost everything. It lives in research papers and science fiction. It's worth knowing the term, but it has nothing to do with running your business this year.
Types Of AI By How They Think
A second map, often taught in classrooms, sorts AI by memory and understanding.
Exists
Reactive Machines
Respond to what's in front of them with no memory of the past. The classic example is IBM's Deep Blue chess computer.
Exists
Limited Memory
Learn from past data and recent context. Almost all modern AI fits here, from self-driving features to chat assistants that remember your conversation.
Research
Theory Of Mind
Would understand that people have feelings, beliefs and intentions, and adjust. Today's AI can imitate this in its wording, but it doesn't truly understand.
Hypothetical
Self-Aware AI
Would have its own consciousness. No AI is anywhere near this, whatever a chatbot might say about itself.
The Technology Under The Hood
You don't need to be technical, but these words come up constantly. Think of them as nesting dolls, each one inside the last.
- Rule-based AI. The older approach: people write "if this, then that" rules. Still great for simple, predictable jobs like routing a form.
- Machine learning. Instead of following written rules, the system learns patterns from examples — like learning which emails are spam from millions of samples.
- Deep learning. Machine learning using large "neural networks", loosely inspired by the brain. It powers image recognition, voice assistants and translation.
- Large language models (LLMs). Deep learning trained on huge amounts of text, so it can read, write, summarize and reason through problems in plain language. This is what's inside ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini.
- Generative AI. Any AI that creates new content: text, images, audio, video or code.
Types Of AI You'll Actually Use
This is the most practical map: sorting AI by the job it does.
Generative AI
Writes and makes things: drafts, product descriptions, social posts, images, proposals.
Conversational AI
Chatbots and voice assistants that answer questions, like a website help widget.
Predictive AI
Forecasts what's likely to happen: demand, cash flow, which leads will buy, which customers might leave.
Computer Vision
Understands images and video: reading receipts, counting stock, checking quality.
Speech AI
Turns speech into text and back again: meeting notes, call transcripts, voiceovers.
Agentic AI (AI Agents)
Goes beyond answering. It follows a goal through several steps, uses tools, and hands back a result or a recommendation.
Chatbots Vs. AI Agents
This is the difference that matters most for business owners right now. A chatbot waits for your question and answers it. An AI agent is given a job — "review my last 50 customer reviews and tell me what to fix first" — and works through the steps: gathering the information, analyzing it, running the numbers and ending with a clear next move.
Chat answers. Agents think it through.
That's why every Everyday Agentics agent is built to analyze and recommend, not just chat. You make the final call; the agent does the legwork.
Which Types Of AI Help A Small Business?
You don't need every type. For most lean teams, three cover nearly everything:
- Generative AI for the writing. Emails, posts, proposals and FAQs drafted in minutes, then edited by you.
- AI agents for the thinking. Pricing checks, competitor research, finding bottlenecks, scoring big decisions — the analysis you'd otherwise pay a consultant for.
- Simple automation for the repetition. Moving data between the tools you already use so nothing gets copied by hand.

Using Any Type Of AI Ethically
Whatever type you use, the same few rules keep you and your customers safe:
- Keep a person in charge of decisions that affect people.
- Check facts and numbers before you act on them. AI can sound sure and still be wrong.
- Be honest with customers about where you use AI.
- Don't paste private customer data into tools you haven't vetted.

Common Questions
Are there different types of AI?
Yes. AI is usually sorted by capability (narrow, general, super), by how it works (reactive, limited memory, theory of mind, self-aware), and by the job it does (generative, predictive, conversational, vision, speech and agents).
How many types of AI are there?
It depends on the map. The two classic lists each have four or three types; the practical list of business uses has about six. All are correct — they just sort AI differently.
What type of AI is ChatGPT?
ChatGPT is narrow, limited-memory, generative AI built on a large language model. It can also act as an agent when it's set up to use tools and work through multi-step tasks.
What's the most useful type of AI for a small business?
For most small businesses, generative AI for writing and AI agents for analysis and decisions deliver the fastest, most practical results.
Do I need to code to build an AI agent?
No. Many agents today are built with plain-language instructions inside tools you already use. Our members build their first working agent in about a week with no code.
